Big Air Bronze for Morgan

Billy Morgan Bronze Snowboard Big Air

PyeongChang 2018

Olympic news: Toots, Mack, Morgan Big Air 1, 2, 3

Yes, we know there was obviously a Gold and Silver awarded in today’s Snowboard Big Air but we’re British so forgive us – Billy Morgan taking Bronze is the main news today. This is a huge result for UK snowboarding.

Morgan dropped his first run only to soon pick up the gears in his second before sending it out of the park with his final run – a frontside 1440 triple, double-grabbed tail and mute. It’s a trick he’s never landed before in competition so big props to the lad for stepping up when it mattered most. By winning Bronze, Morgan (28 – which is really pretty old in freestyle snowboarding terms) gave the UK our most successful Winter Games ever with 5 medals – just another nice little accolade to add to an already immense achievement.

Obviously there was still a comp going on here for more than just Bronze . . .  Canada’s Seb Toots (Sebastien Toutant) was on epic, unbeatable form nailing Gold ahead of the USA’s Kyle Mack. Both relied on their first two runs for their places, leading to a super tense wait in the finish area as a whole stack of riders lined up to launch their final runs – riders that could easily have rocked the podiums.

First Corning stacked it going for quad – then Bergrem fell – then Mack – followed closely by Boesiger until only Max Parrot was left as the sole rider who could change the podium positions. When it came to it, he too stacked going for – what would have been – a Gold-winning 1800. He had options to go for an easier trick but he obviously had Gold firmly in his sights and only something massive would have added to his previous 85.00. He went all in for the win but couldn’t nail it in the end – leaving Toutant, Mack and Morgan to all breathe a collective sigh of relief as the medal places were confirmed.

Epic stuff.
