Rossignol PIQ

We took delivery of this a few days ago. The PIQ robot has us excited – very excited. PIQ promises to be able to measure turn angle, speed of edge to edge transition between turns, G-force exerted, speed and turn rate. And that’s just its turn-measuring capacity. PIQ also features a jump analyser which records rotations, air-time and G-force at landing. Pretty incredible stuff.

rossignol-piq-app-screens-2

The PIQ app is currently targeted at skiing though we’ll have a full review on how well it translates the data captured to snowboarding. Apparently, there are plans to release a snowboard-specific version soon – which wouldn’t be that difficult considering the amount of real-time tracking data it already captures. Plus, a kitesurf version is already available proving that PIQ is more than capable of tracing more snowboard-oriented movement.

The first thing you note as you unbox is just how small the PIQ. And by ‘small’, we mean tiny. it measures only 44mm x 38.3mm and is an impossible 5.4mm tall. And it weighs just 9.8g. The robot slots into a velcro strap which the user attaches to his/her boot. It is waterproof to IP67 standard. The unit comes shipped with a remote charger, capable of supplying power for an additional three full charges. Neat.

PIQ hooks up to an app on your mobile. Once paired, this is where the real magic happens. The PIQ robot records your stats in real time and stores them on the device until you’re ready to transfer to the app. The app then displays what you did during your day. The process is seamless and set up is simple.

We’ll have a full report on how the PIQ works at the start of the coming season but, in tests we’ve done here on bikes, it worked well and captured speeds reliably when compared our iRide tracking system.
